STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) plays an important role in teaching and learning here at Scoil Íosa and we are so proud of our scientists, engineers and mathematicians.  Check out some of the amazing work we have taken part in this year!

Living Things

Second Class learned all about wasps this week. We were lucky that Julieanne had an actual wasps nest for us to investigate!
Ms. O'Gorman's class are investigating what plants need to grow. We learned that they need water and light... that's why we keep them by the window and we take turns to water them everyday.
Ms. O'Gorman's class have been learning all about 'Myself'. We are learning about our five senses. We went on a sensory walk and talked all about what we could see, hear, touch and even did some taste testing with our food dudes. Afterwards we had some relaxing sensory play with shaving foam and paint! It got messy but we had lots of fun!

Junior and Senior Infants have been learning all about animals and their habitats. We worked in groups to build some cosy hibernation habitats for some of our woodland friends!
This week 4th and 5th class used our beautiful school garden to learn about different types of plants.

Energy and Forces

Ms. Levey's class have been exploring sound. Check out our investigation ...
6th class have been exploring forces in all kinds of daredevil stunts. We turned our attention to sky divers and air resistance.... we investigated what material would be best suited to make a parachute. We designed and made our own parachutes, ensured a fair test and used an egg as a substitute to an actual sky diver !! Warning *** this video contains loud, excited noises!!

Materials

6th class combined Maths and Science for some Friday fun. We have been working on the topic of money and budgets. Today , each group was tasked with the challenge of building a flood defence to protect our animals from a flood. To add to the challenge each group had €200 to spend on raw materials and we had to budget. We worked as a group to decide which materials to purchase and got to building!

STEM Show and Tell

Jacob in 5th class is a budding scientist and software developer. During our time learning from home he had lots of fun exploring problem solving , coding and robotics. When we heard of his work we just had to know more! He sent 6th class this video during remote learning to explain his work and kindly let us meet dash in person/robotic form when we returned to school! Well done Jacob and thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us!
