Welcome to Ms. Donohue's 6th class!

Persuasive Writing

We are learning about persuasive texts. On News2day we heard about a tax being added to some of our favourite sugary drinks. Drinks with more than 5g of sugar per 100ml will cost an extra 30c per litre. Some of us thought this was a great idea, while others weren't so keen. We did some research and then held a debate about the issue.
In favour:
  • 75% of children in Ireland have tooth decay.
  • Just 2 fizzy drinks a week can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke or diabetes.
  • The extra cost might stop people buying sugary drinks too often.
  • It might reduce obesity in Ireland and free up hospital beds.
  • 25% of Irish adults are obese.
Against:
  • People can still buy other sugary things.
  • Children and adults will probably still buy sugary drinks.
  • 30c isn't very much so it might not make a difference.
  • The people who make the drinks will lose out on money.
  • It's not fair on parents if children still demand fizzy drinks.

Procedural Writing

This term in Scoil Íosa we are learning about procedural texts. Procedural texts list a sequence of actions or steps needed to make or do something. We are going to be writing lots of recipes, science experiments and instructions for playing games. Today we followed a recipe to make some simple, healthy pizzas. Maybe you'd like to try it!
Ingredients: 1 tortilla wrap, tomato purée, grated mozzarella cheese, toppings of your choice (pepperoni, ham, pepper, sweetcorn etc.)
Instructions:
1.Preheat the oven to 200ºC.
2.Using the back of a spoon, spread the tomato purée all over the pizza base.
3.Sprinkle the grated cheese over the whole pizza.
4.Cut your toppings into small pieces.
5.Scatter the toppings evenly over the pizza.
6.Place the pizza carefully on a baking tray and ask an adult to put it into the oven.
7.Bake in the hot oven for 7-8 minutes until the edges are crisp and the cheese is lightly browned. Keep an eye on it!
8.Allow the cheese to cool slightly before cutting into slices and serving.

Go Noodle!

With all the wet weather lately, there have been a few days when we didn't get to go out for lunch. We love a website called Go Noodle, which helps get our bodies moving! It has lots of fun stretches and dance routines, and also some mindfulness exercises for when our bodies and brains have been working hard!

Crafty Christmas

Check out our light up Christmas cards! We used copper tape, LED lights and a button (watch) battery to add flashing lights to our beautiful Christmas designs.
Nollaig Shona do gach duine!

Maths Skills

We've been solving lots of money problems! With a given budget, we had to plan parties, choose Christmas presents, and decorate our dream bedroom.

Dancing Queens (and Kings)

We've been doing hip hop dancing with Nadia for a few weeks now, and we're finally ready to show off our moves!

November

In November, we remember people in our families and communities who have died. Our Tree of Remembrance inside the main door shows the names of the people we are thinking of.

Smoothie Time!
3rd class have been learning about procedures this week. We wrote procedures on how to make smoothies! Delicious!

Happy Halloween

10 Things Found in a Wizard's Pocket

We've written some great list poems! We read a poem called "10 Things Found in a Wizard's Pocket" and were inspired to create our own. Check them out below! What do you think hides inside a wizard's pocket?

Family Crests

We've been learning about family crests this week. We researched traditional crests and then developed our own to show the things that make our families special!

Our Fire Poetry

We love poetry in 3rd and 4th class.  Last week our teacher gave us a challenge to write our own poem about fire and learn it off by heart. First we made a concept map and chatted all about what fire makes us think of. Then we made a sound poem together and played some drama games pretending to move like flames. Lastly we wrote our own poems and practiced them for homework. Check out our video...maybe you'll be inspired to write some poetry yourself!

Maths Word Problem Competition

The buachaillí agus cailíní were having a maths competition this week. They created and designed their own word problems. It was very difficult to decide the winners because both teams made such a great effort. It was very close and our teacher was very impressed with our work. The winners decided to share their prizes with the rest of the class, such kindness!

Labhair Gaeilge Liom

Tá gach duine ar scoil ag déanamh iarracht mór níos mó gaeilge a úsáid timpeall na scoile.
Everyone in school is making a big effort to use more gaeilge around the school. Join us at home by adding a cúpla focal to your day. Féach ar na físeanna we have been working on in class. Bain taitneamh as agus go raibh maith agaibh!

Advertising

We have been learning all about advertising here in 3rd and 4th class. It can be difficult not to get tricked into wanting things that you don't really need. Advertising uses lots of techniques like special offers and celebrity endorsements to encourage people to buy all kinds of products. Check out our ad for fidget spinners and see if you find yourself popping out to buy one!

P.E at Phoenix Dragon Gym

On Friday  the 26th of May we walked to Phoenix Dragon Gym for a gymnastics P.E session. After we got ready upstairs we hit the bouncy floor and our instructors Niamh and Seán led us in a warm up. We did lots of movement and stretching to warm up. We were split into two groups and each group got to train using the professional equipment. We learned how to use the parallel bars (the P bars), the trampet and the balancing beams. We had lots of fun and trained hard. We are really looking forward to next Friday.

Caring for our Chicks

We had a very busy Friday looking after our seven chicks AND going to the Civic Theatre for a ballet show. We got to see a dancing interpretation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It was really interesting how they told the story without using any words!

What a lovely Friday. Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine!

Engineers Week 2017

On the 8th of March we went to Tallaght Stadium for Engineers Week. This year's event was called The Science of Bubbles. The show had an explosive start with the famous coke and mentos experiment but the fun did not end there. We observed gigantic bubbles, colour changing solutions, chemical reactions and lots more.   Engineering is about doing and we can't wait to have fun making our own bubble experiments on Friday. Thanks to Scientific Sue we found out how to make bubbles float, sink, touchable, bounce  and she shared her tried and tested bubble formula with us. Go raibh míle maith agat Sue!

Grandparents Day

We had a lovely time in school today celebrating with our grandparents. The boys and girls sang beautifully, recited a funny poem and asked lots of questions about long ago.

Thanks so much to all of our visitors!

Problem Solving with 3rd Class

We have been working hard on some videos to help us understand multiplication and division. We are getting better at solving everyday maths problems. Hope you enjoy watching them as much as we enjoy making them!

How many frogs were left?

              9 - 2 = 7
There were two musical frogs left.

Scoil Íosa goes science crazy for Science Week!

Diet Coke and Mentos Eruption
What you need:
  • 5 mentos on a piece of string
  • A large bottle of diet coke
  • A bottle cap with holes in it

We played the role of scientists in an exciting week of asking questions, making predictions and conducting experiments. Every person in our class explored a topic, performed an experiment and discussed their results. As you can see from the above video we also had A LOT of fun carrying out the well known Diet Coke and Mentos Eruption.

Maths through Lego

Thanks so much to Mr. Stone and the 3rd Year boys from Greenhills College for coming down and helping us learn with their Lego Workshops. Over three sessions, we looked at fractions, number, shape and space and most importantly... we had lots of fun while learning!

Our Christmas Poem

Here in 3rd and 4th class we love raps, rhymes and poetry. During the month of December we found lots of festive poems online and enjoyed reading them so much that we decided to change one and make it our own. Check out our video below!

Science - Materials and Change

We went to the kitchen to investigate three states of water during science time.
First we filled containers with water and had a class discussion about liquids.
Next our teacher helped us to use a kettle to explore what happens when water is heated. As the water heated we noticed that it started to bubble and boil. We observed steam coming out of the kettle. We turned a liquid into a gas!
Before we returned to class we filled containers with water and put them into the freezer. Check out our photos below to see the effects of cooling on water.
Over the next week we all did our own experiments on water, some scientists went even further and looked at the effects of water on chestnuts and how some leaves are waterproof. Fantastic work!

Halloween

The Scoil Íosa Witches Walk is one of the highlights of our year. Everybody always makes a colossal effort to dress up, and this Halloween was no exception!
We walked through Tymon Park until we reached the playground and the woods in Templeogue. Here we stayed building huts and forts and having all sorts spooky adventures. Later that day we enjoyed party games organised by our wonderful Parents Association. Check out our slideshow, who do you think had the best costume??

A Trip to the Civic Theatre

We had a nice time in the Civic Theatre during the Red Line Book Festival. Patrick Ryan is a wonderful storyteller. For this show he put a modern twist on Shakespeare's plays. They were very gruesome and an absolute treat to listen to!
